Let’s say that you have the resources and perhaps an old favorite car of yours in your garage waiting for it’s engine to be fixed. An idea about doing an EV conversion on it pops up, but you don’t know much about EVs or how to do it. A friend of yours is willing to help you built it and train you in the process if you accept. Would you do it?

I’d swap the XF. I sincerely believe going electric is the best fit for Jaguar. Either all engine or all electric but never hybrid. Don’t know why but mixing the two seems like an awful idea.

I would. I’d own an EV right now if they were cheaper. One with reasonable range would be my perfect DD.

I’d do an EV swap on a Volvo P1800 coupe. Something seems right about that.

I’d rock an electric Jag come to think of it. Perhaps an XJ with upgraded wiring in the process. lol.

I would sacrifice the rear seats and trunk space, as well as the engine bay, of my Escort if it meant I could be P100D fast. Hell, even just regular 85 fast.

I hear there are many RX-8's that need new hearts... An electric motor is about the same dimensions as a Renesis.

I would do it in a heartbeat, if I had somewhere to charge it.
So, here’s the thing. My daily commute is 10 miles round trip, and I drive my Prius on it, right now - the Miata gets terrible fuel efficiency on those trips.
Now, there’s off-the-shelf EV conversions for the Miata, but I hate how they work - they replace the engine, but leave the rest of the driveline intact. It means you keep that amazing transmission... but you carry excess weight, most of the transmission’s capability is wasted, you get higher driveline losses, etc., etc.
I’m not sure which powertrain I’d use - it’d either be the Smart ForTwo ED’s motor, or the small rear motor from an AWD non-Performance Tesla Model S (think a 70D). Flip it around so that the motor fits where the fuel tank used to be. Then, there’ll still be some room up there for battery, in addition to the center tunnel. Could probably get, oh, 15-20 kWh up there.
The Miata is a car that doesn’t do long-range driving well due to cabin noise reasons, so the EV usage model fits much more closely with what a Miata is actually good at.

A off road ready FJ40. Instant Torque, Great power, can control wheels individually. Would be great.

Compromise: PHEV RX8 using the regular Renesis powerplant as a range extender.
Basically an i8.

might actually simplify the old thing. dunno if you have ever seen how to start one, but its....... challenging. then to end up with an almost silent T. would have to work out the range thing, i live a ways from things.

I like that idea. And rotaries would benefit from this. Let the electric motor give the torque and the power to spin the rotors at starts then let the rotor do the rest once it gets to a suitable revolution where it starts to sip gas.

There’s a video out there of Tsuchiya driving an EV rx7, it’s hilariously slow compared to a stock one they brought out. Worth it for the laugh though.
